Barclay Lake 2009
In the middle of May we went to Barclay Lake, it was a 2-mile hike to the campsite, on the way out it took us an hour to hike on the way in it took two. There was a grand total of 2.5 feet of snow on the ground (more than was anticipated, of course.) There were only four Scouts that went on the hike but that didn't make it any less fun. We had a dry camp site, but make sure you never wear cotton socks take it from the guy whose socks never dried until a week later. Cotton kills!
It was warm and sunny even though there was snow on the ground. There was a large rock that we wanted to sleep on but we decided not to. We also climbed on logs and saw many avalanches on Baring Mountain. We were able to have a campfire in the snow which melted the snow and sunk down so we never had to put it out.
Overall it was a fun filled hike and we were able to get a lot accomplished such as a day hike most of the way up to Eagle Lake, finding our way without a trail, and more camaraderie throughout. Barclay Lake is near the town of Baring, Washington on the edge of the new Wild Sky Wilderness. This hike would have been more fun in the summer because we could have swam in the lake and had an easier time hiking. - AJK
