Klondike Derby 2009
At around 6:00 PM on Friday, January 9th, about seven brave Scouts assembled at the church to drive up to Ensign Ranch to stay overnight for the Klondike Derby. When we arrived, everyone set up tents in the surrounding snow. After all the tents were up, we got the rest of our gear out of the cars and then hung out in the cabin before going to sleep. During the night, the temperature went down to 25F! The next morning most of the Scouts who had not spent the night showed up at 9:00 AM to participate in the Klondike Games. The games were played as a patrol and there were many things to do such as, measuring the hight of a tall tree, starting a fire and cooking some food, administering first aid for a theoretical fall into some icy water, a figure eight sled race, and more. The games took the whole day, but at lunchtime, the community soup-pot started, which was made possible by two cans of soup every scout brought. The games ended and everyone headed over to the field for the "Great Race" All the Scouts who had made qualifying times in the figure eight, as well as all the Webelos Scouts who came, were eligible. They lined up with their sleds, and were off. The winners obtained much glory, and at the award ceremony, they got the big sled trophy, while the Webelos who had won got a slightly smaller one. And then patrol awards were handed for all the events. After that, everyone went home and got some good sleep. - JFW
