Ice Axe Training 2010

It was a gorgeous, sunny day, and there was still plenty of snow up at Alpental to train at ice axe arrest. There was a bit more elevation gain to get to the training site on the Alpental side as opposed to the previous two years when we had a pretty flat hike with just the hill we trained on to climb at the end. Scouts had lots of fun throwing themselves down the hillside all morning and early afternoon. They all practiced the 3 types of arrests, proper hiking technique with ice axes, self belaying, kick steps, plunge steps, and butt glissades. A fun afternoon of training. - MHG
