Klondike Derby 2010
The Klondike Derby was a huge success. We left for Ensign Ranch Family Cabin 1 at 7pm from the church with 17 Scouts and 8 adults. Three Webelos Scouts from Pack 282 and their Den Leader met us at the cabin and stayed there for the night. There was about a foot of snow which was mostly frozen, and there was also a little bit of light rain. Friday night we had a campfire program including skits, songs, and s'mores, and got to play around in the snow for awhile. We had our tents set up early, but got to bed around 11:30pm. During the night, there was no wind, but the temperature got down to 31 degrees.
The next morning we woke up at 7:30am, tore down camp and loaded the cars, ate breakfast, practiced our knots, and were joined by 4 more Scouts and 6 more adults. Then we headed over to where the events were going to take place and got signed up for the Derby. Three of our five Patrols were able to field teams. A few Scouts from Lost Boys and Regrettables joined Allatuna, A-Team, and Z-. A total of 34 Boy Scout Patrols and 11 Webelos Dens from around our District entered in the competition.
We competed in the log saw, figure eight sled race, first aid, knot tying, snowshoe relay, and fire building and cooking. Our Patrols did very well in all the events and placed in several of them.
After all of the events, there were several great snowball fights, and good soup too. All three of our patrols made it into the "Great Race". After the race, everyone went to receive the awards, and we took the trophy home. Troop 282 came in 1st and 3rd overall, and won several more ribbons for our Troop flag. The car ride was around an hour and a half, and we all talked about how much fun it was all the whole way home.
Special thanks to Mr. Brzoska who ran the Klondike Derby for the past 10 years. This was his last year running the event and he passed the job onto Mr. Heidal. Good luck to Mr. Heidal for the next 10 years! - AMG
