Scouting for Food 2010

On Saturday March 13th, Scouts from our Troop and Cub Scouts from Pack 282 showed up to drop off fliers for Scouting for Food. We met at 9am at the West Seattle High School parking lot. We filled out door fliers, ate donuts, and left the parking lot at 9:30am to hand the fliers out.

We put out fliers from 44th Avenue to 56th Avenue, and from Spokane Street to Genesee Street. It took us until around 11:30am, and we still had some fliers left. We returned to the parking lot, got into our cars, and went home.

The next Saturday at 9am, we all met at West Side Presbyterian Church and had donuts. Once everyone was there, we left and collected all of the food. Once we had all of it, we went back to the church with the scale, weighed the food, packed it into one pickup truck, and took it to the West Seattle Food Bank. While we were at the food bank, we met up with Cub Scouts from Pack 793, brought all our food inside, dumped it out onto a big table, and put it all away by the type of food. After that, Jack Wagstaff who is the operations manager for the food bank told us about what they would do with the food we brought, and answered questions.

All of the food collected by Pack and Troop 282 weighed about 920 pounds. Between the two weekends 14 Boy Scouts and 7 adults from our Troop volunteered a total of 63.5 hours of service to our community. - AMG
